Meta was superb. His ending tracks were just simply unbelievable. One of the best set I have heard at that time and on top of that perfect mixing. It was fun to listen to Facehead. Very different from any dark sets I have heard in sometime. Will be fun to seem him next week in Iowa (too bad I wont be there). Primordial Ooze as usual oozing some super music. Then the morning sets of Professor X, Derby, KT were all good and I thoroghly enjoyed taking off my shirt and shoes and dance on the grass. What a way to bring in the summer

Great party, as usual. All the sets were great, but Facehead’s and KT’s were probably my favorites. Anyone know what her opening track was? It had jazzy piano in it. I was surely quite impressed by Meta’s set also, but I think it was a little too early for it or something. Either that, or I was just too blown away to actually dance for any long period of time. I just had to stand and listen.

Thanks to Tyler, Jeff, and Deb for all the great organization, and for the deco people. It looked like a little alien world amongst the vast natural landscape.

I was thinking of giving shout outs to a bunch of people that I had fun talking to, but there were far too many and I love you all. For some of you, I’ll see you next weekend in Iowa. For everyone else, see you at Earthdance!

It wasn’t chillout only stage.

This is actually my favorite format for a party (almost) start out with ambient soundscapes, move to slow breaks, pump in some progressive into fullon then dark twilight..would have loved more slow bpm morning to blend down into the chill for my perfect night.

With a party this size I think it’s great to have one stage. Everyone had fabulous sets! I especially enjoyed Meta’s, I liked Facehead’s very much also , took a bit of a power nap to it and had some nice dreams

Had a very very sweet expeirence………..loved the stage deco and the chill startup on those wonderful speakers.

It was great to see all u guys in shorts, no footwear…etc. Loved the sunset and rise. Everyones set was very good.

Venue just rocks………and the best thing……..not even a single flea or bug……

This was one of those mainly-stomp parties and I am 100% for that but I know that some people other than me were unhappy that it was mostly stomp and that there was no chill alternative. I know that 1 stage is going to happen from time to time but I think one of the things people have said about Chilluminati is we put alot into respecting the chill space.

I’m not criticizing the party but my 100% endorsement will always be for parties with a dedicated (if only very small) chill space. Like Gaian Mind. Tho I am aware that 2 spaces make for more work and additional cost.

It is cool to do one stage occasionally if only because it was so much easier and as already said, it did create nice unity of the party.

facehead – holy fuckenheimers! i was rockin out to this kid hard…and then someone mentioned to me, i believe it was phil, “look at him…he hasnt moved a muscle the last hour. the only facial expression he’s made the whole time he’s been playing has been a slight smirk just before some madness is unleashed upon us. he looks like he lives in his mom’s basement and concocts ways to torture and murder people.” i cant wait to see him again in less than a week in iowa. hell i cant wait to talk to this guy!

I’m sooooooooooooooooo glad to hear that people enjoyed the deco. I was sort of afraid that ppl would think it looked cheap, the stuff that Carli and I brought to hang was pretty much just wire, string, and a few tapestries We were only asked to help out with deco a few days prior to the event and it was already an extremely busy week for us. A lot of the stuff that we hung was originally created for the chill room at Resonate 2.0, another event that we were asked to work just a few days in advance. I would have liked to create some original artwork created specifically for this event… oh well… maybe next time…

For those of you who don’t know me… my name is Derek, my partner is Carli. We’ve been a part of the Rendezvous crew (http://www.myspace.com/rendezvouscrew) for a few months now. It was definitely intimidating for me to participate in an event like this one with such incredible artists involved. The deco that I’ve seen Psymbolic do is just so amazing I felt dwarfed, hehe. How can one expect to be on the same level as those who have decorated for Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, Bluetech…. the list goes on. I guess you’re always more critical of your own work than other people are. We did the best we could with what we had to work with.

Much thanks to everyone who helped with setting up and providing the deco on the main stage. Jeff for providing the lights, Paul and co, the two redheads from central IL who I can’t remember your names, and anyone else that I missed. I never ended up meeting this Allison who was supposed to be coordinating the deco effort, perhaps we’ll cross paths sometime in the future. Heard she had to work… such a shame. I took plenty of photos of us setting up and after dark, I’ll be posting the best ones on my myspace and tribe pages tonight or tomorrow for everyone to enjoy.

As for the event itself…
The venue was great. Personally, I thought that Meta was fucking amazing. He spins the exact same style of psy that I do… I’d never really heard a set like that. It gave me so many ideas that I went home and spent 4 or 5 hours on my decks even though I had zero sleep on Saturday night. I’ve never been keen on the darker stuff but I thought that Facehead was incredible as well. My brain was pulverized into jelly, lol. The sound was also amazing… I came to a realization that I truly didn’t understand how my own tracks would sound when played out on a big system… psy just has so many layers, so many timbres. At least now I’ve got some concept of how the different sounds will play out. The live video was unbelievable as well, I really appreciate living in a city wish such a vibrant motion graphic scene.

All in all Secret Fire III was an amazing experience for me. I met many great people… and I’m sure there were 4 times as many amazing people that I didn’t get the chance to meet. I can’t wait to participate in future events. See you all around!!

I was talking with an older gentleman named Bruce that I had met there. He said something like “You know, at some of these events they have a separate stage with the more downtempo music… which is really pretty interesting. I’m not so much a fan of the dance-type stuff.” This was at like… 10am when this girl (sorry I don’t know your name!!) was spinning some really dark, hard stuff.

It would have definitely been nice to transition to chill at daybreak. I could have easily drifted off to a peaceful slumber listening to Shai and Varun’s set if they’d played it at 7am. As it was I was just laying in my tent quite awake. I would like a link to the bootleg of that if you’ve got it… or any other bootlegs that were recorded that night.

Another thing I forgot to mention in my previous post was the lack of a shade structure / rain fly for the DJ booth.
If it had rained there would have been problems… as it was those who spun in the morning were subjected to the full heat of the midwest summer sun. (Summer Sizzle anyone? lol) Yeeouch!

I think it was right decission and lesser evil.

In the past, both stages@Chilluminati parties had no/small amount of people due to attendance/big areas where those parties were hold@. I love chill out much more than trance but I’d rather see one stage with exactly the same music progression like we had last weekend and a lot of people in your sight all the time than 2 separate empty areas.

I heard KT was playing harder than she planned because those who were dancing stopped when she started played lighter music. Much to the joy of some and the chagrin of others.. You can’t make everyone happy…

What is maybe an option is another crew setting up a chill space if one is not planned, once they get approval. Maybe limitations will be set with say a post 3 or 4 am start at smaller events to help maintain the mainfloor vibe. This will give people the choice towards the end of party to relax and sleep or still rock out.

Many options.. not enough parties to try ideas out at…

The problem with a forum like this is you’re only hearing from the really passionate people. People who are marginal or who have given up on the harder music aren’t bothering to read or respond.

I think if you know you’re only going to get 100 people or so, you should do either a straight Goa event with progression, or a chill event because it’s true, 2 stages are too much for that number of people.

OTOH the 300-600 parties – the rural weekenders and the chicago warehouse parties – those you can have separate spaces without sacrificing the feel of the event.

So the 1 stage people and the 2 stage people are both right – for their size event.

The fans have a role too – if events get larger we can do more within budget, and we will have more people to make it happen. Numbers attending dictate much of what can happen.

Chill is more than a style of music – it’s also a separate space with a different vibe and deco, and an altar, and an attitude.

Again though I thought Secret Fire 3 was great but now we have enough experience with events we can start seeing that not all of them should evolve the same way.

Yeah that = SCAFFOLDING. Troy has been talking about scaffolding for some time. It really works.

It’s also a little expensive! But how great to have the main stage be an integrated structure.

I loved pretty much all of her set, and tried to dance at different points. It was beyond the music’s capabilities though. I was just too f’in tired. So unfortunate…if I would have had the energy, the music she played could have most certainly been soooooo fun to dance to.

Yeah, this is quite true. I know all the psyowans and some others would say I’m not hardcore enough to keep dancing until 10 or longer in the morning, but by the time 7 hit, I was definately wanting chill…badly. I love it just as much as trance at the right times, and at this party it seems to have came both too early and too late. :-\ …Though I may have once again overdid it a little bit. Funny, I keep telling myself, if I just get a little sleep before the morning, everything would work out perfectly. But everyone’s sets are always so damn good and I don’t want to miss out on anything. A double-edged sword, me thinks.

this party brought back Sacred Earth for me, as someone just stated! It was such a great feeling to dance on such solid ground, under such a clear and beautiful sky, with all the mind blowing deco and INSANE sound system that the Chilluminati provided at this one. what a GREAT EVENT! i felt so connected to everyone and especially the music i just posted pictures on facebook, let me know if this link works (it said public link), because if it doesnt i will upload them elsewhere in addition. wish i coulda taken more, but i was too busy stompin and rompin at the event. got to sit down and smoke, chat, chill, with many Psy friends from all over the midwest. what a great reunion and i hope there are more of these SOON!!!! YES!

I think what Damon may have been hinting at is making this a Chillumafia project? which is not the same thing as a true renegade system because we have Chillumafia firmly planted under our boot heel

It depends on the venue as well.

If we’re talking about a big outdoor camping venue then less is probably more.
Many of the outdoor events that I’ve been to have felt “deserted” even with hundreds of people there. There was this one party, “Campout,” last fall that I’d estimate 300-500 people were at… but it felt empty. Why? Because they had 4 stages.

I don’t know how many of you made to any of the mindoutpsyde parties at Emerald City in Cedar Rapids. I think there were only about 150 ppl at Blacklight Forest and they had a psy room and a chill room. Since it was such a small space it didn’t feel too empty.

Right on. That’s exactly what I want. A really comfortable quieter place where you can talk and listen to chill music, no effort put into it necessarily. That would work at NCN. LOTS of people want that, especially with a longer event.

I was too preoccupied with getting there and having other things to share with the group. I’m horrible at bringing food, but I have been known to bring a couple hundred cans of beer to a 3 day party…

But I do have one gripe. Why did Meta start? Isnt he like more twilight early morning player? The music he played would have been perfect in the morning after primordial ooze…..but then you cannot make everybody happy.

Wow ;D ;D ;D, can be a word that is overly used in my rendition of just how much of a good time I indeed had. I certainly did not expect to have as good as time as I did. I don’t know why, I guess its just that stuff has been so busy as of late I haven’t been taking the time to enjoy the finer things. But @ SF3 it seems that the finer things are all that I had the pleasure of enjoying.

First of all on the way there, Katy and I are crusin, “taking in the beautiful greenery of the area”, when all of a sudden Katy slams on the brakes without saying a word. “What is going on?” I exclaimed with a puzzled look on my face. Without a word she gets out and I figure she just saw a pile of cash on the rroad or something. Nope, it was a turtle, just chillin in the middle of the road. So she goes, picks it up and it starts whizzing everywhere. Off to the side of the road it went and off we went to have the time of our lives. With our Karma banks filled thanks to my lil humanitarian.

After the beautiful positive karma filled ride up we arrived at like 4 and set everything up by six. I was astonished at how beautiful the deco looked and was even more pleased to see those two coloums of distruction ready to reap their sonic salvation upon all of us. I can’t believe how fucking cool it is to be more than a football field away from the speakers AND STILL GET STEREO SOUND!!!!! By far the BEST of the BEST when it comes to speaker systems. I talked to the sound guy and he said that if we put those on scaffolding next time we almost double the range of the stereo, imagine that!!! ???

The string art was so cool. I absolutly am in love with string art, I think that it is so awsome. And the placement of the art was dead on, it made for some Killargh pics. I was blown away at how the nighttime stage looked, pure bliss. ;D ;D ;D

I must say that the style that the music progressed throughout the night was amazing. It really felt like a 3 day packed into one magic night and afternoon. I personally loved META playing the slot he played. I felt that there was a great progression of sound from him. And definetly some of the freshest sounding stuff out there, awsome bass and killer percussion. I really loved the set. Next was Facehead who had some mystery behind him, because I couldn’t find him and chat with him before he played. But OH MAN DID THIS GUY ROCK. The shit was just up my alley. Stompers Delight type shit. I think China sent a noise complaint for me stompin too hard. I love the stuff with dense basslines and percussion that sticks out as if it is played louder, nutty music for an even nuttyer experience. It was so much fun to dance to that stuff, I always want to go and dance when I play my stuff and his music put me in the same psychosis I fall into when playing my shit. WOO HOO.

The OOZE are killin it harder and harder with every time that I see em. I mean their music is unbelieveble. I loved every single track that you guys played. I heard nothing but amazing things from you guys and I expect nothing less every time I see you. Theres nothing like REALLY grinding it out throughtout the night and getting rescued from the darkness by morning blasters. I loved all the morning stuff that was played by Brad and Rob. Ya’ll really play some sick tracks. It carried me into the morning like I was floating on psychedellic clouds. KT I don’t know what the hell people are talkin about, IT WAS NOT TO HARD! I loved it. I think that looking arouind and observing what the crowd needs is KEY. And that was done right. Just after I thought all I had in me was to drink beer and marinate my ears were AWAKENED once again. Slammin set start to finish. Way to keep shit slammin and keep people dancing. Rock on sistah. See you in CALI!!! 8)

I think after that I was pretty mush done for. Sunburnt, a little drunk, and a lota something else (that SF3 vibe), I headed home. Overall I would have to say that this was one of the best chillum parties by far, the vibe and people were incredible. I brought 2 friends (Dakota and Greg) out to their FIRST all psy party and lets just say that you all will be seeing a LOT more of em and like wise. We need to keep this vibe in the air and soon everyone will be smiling as hard as we all are. I would like to thank everyone for the good conversation and kind words, you rock.

Jeff, I was very happy that you found Gregs artwork interesting. As he mentioned he started a UV piece and if his drawing is even a fragment of what he can do I think we may have just opened up pandoras box of UV deco. This is going to be awsome. Greg is bringing down a lot more of his artwork this Psunday for the Summah Sizzle. We are going to create a psychedellic art mini-expo as a part of the deco in the indoor chill area. I am so excited. ;D

Big thanks to the Chilluminati for this event. Thanks to Trancepsyndicate for the dicovery of the venue and that sound! Oh the Sound! 100,000 watts of pure sonic nectar. Havnt heard an outdoor system with such range clarity. Gutwrenchingly loud but you could still have a chat with someone on the floor and hear every word! Thanks to the deco team… The sun tapestry on the left was wonderful! Stringart above the DJ was the perfect touch. Syddartha’s artwork had me frozen in awe!

Was wonderful partying with the midwest family again… Cant wait for the next one!

The ravers haven’t HEARD psy yet. The jungle, house, techno, and trance posses have a vested interest in keeping us out. I think we’ll make em look weak as hell when we show up with better spoeakers, better music, better deco, and better attitudes. Lots won’t “get it”, but lots will…

Our first event METATRONIC 1 was mostly attended by ravers. It’s not new to them.

i still can’t believe i danced about 90% of the time i was there. next time i will make sure i don’t have to work that day so i can get there early
and wow on early morning sunrises over ponds with such beautiful music and bullfrogs singing along.

I dunno why more ravers don’t listen to psy… or why psy people seem to avoid raves. Theoretically it’s all the same, the psy community just has nicer, more contientious people

Maybe because psytrance wasn’t present@raves here in midwest back then? Maybe because a lot ravers think trance = Tiesto & unicorns.

This is the biggest difference. Moreover, I just cant seem to force myself to non-psy electronica.

Different generation/ Probably. Nowadays underage kids can’t get into clubs where OCCASIONALLY psytrance is being played nor raves that goverment keeps cracking down. So they have no chance to listen to other music than MTV and commercial radio. Just thinking out loud ….

Not sure where the hell you were going but acid techno has always been strong in the midwest, you would prolly have to leave chicago though. Chicago has always been house/jungle unless you dug deep.

Hate to break it to ya, but psy IS rave music. *cough*acid trance*cough* The key here is that were going to have a chance to expose about 70% of the people that are really into electronic music to the best we have to offer. If 10% of them dig it, that doubles our attendance and makes our family bigger.

I was thinking Chicago will be like any other BIG city in Europe (London, Amsterdam, Berlin etc.) or NYC: all different genres will be present in local clubs. We were lucky cause we like good music so we enjoyed hard techno/d’n'b/house/world music djs/artists that were coming to Chicago.

Um, in general, any time you tack the “UK” in front of a genre it means you are refering to the cheesy crappy version.

Reference UK hard house or UK Speed garage for examples of said crappiness.

Um US hard house and US nrg is the crappiest anyway ….

NRG is bad no matter what – its music thats always at 10, has no ups and downs…

Are you familiar with labels like Tinrib, Chug’N'Bump, Kaktai, Honey Pot etc. and stuff theye were releasing in late 90s?

1st releases weren’t that bad … later the whole subgenre went down straight to toilet

First of all, thank you Derby for helping me get set up in the morning for my set. The turntable case/sun visor was awsome! I’d had some issuse if it wasn’t for your help. Laptop screen + screaming sunlight = >:(

Everyone’s set was amazing! Meta was badass, Facehead rocked 2 weeks in a row for me, Kt’s morning set was amazing and hard to follow, Varun’s chill was just what the doctor ordered, the deco was amazing including Sunra’s welcomed live art. (I got a sneak peak at her work when Trance Psyndicate was in AZ) The stage was…..well, you know, freakin amazing.

I must also thank everyone for respecting the venue, as we are all fortunate to have it. The venue was not easy to get, nor easy to keep. There is alot of upkeep that must go into it. There is also alot of people who would like to get there hands on it. It has been all of YOU that gave the landowners the faith in who and what we are.

Remember a little party called Earthdance? That was our proving grounds last year and YOU all made them believers. Secret Fire was only a confirmation of that same belief. Thank you and we’ll be seeing you all again there this fall. !
