I want to thank lovely Devorah for her construction of the Phoenix fire sculpture, Matt & Jennifer for their rope web jungle gym, Psygomin and Kris for massive help with deco and setup, Dan for building the bonfire; all the people who moved their cars when I asked them to; all the people who picked up their trash without being asked; Rebeccah, Vito and Garon for the nature walk at a nearby bog; Spunn and the Iowa crew for dazzling fire dance all night; the guys from Nebraska, Iowa and even Louisiana for driving so damn far and being such integral parts of the community; and the venue for being tolerant of the madness and never asking us to lower the volume or otherwise complain.

Thanks to everyone for being good citizens and keeping the grounds in good shape so we could get invited back.

thanks too to Mel/Asylem for her fire juggling and poem that started the phoenix ablaze, and Matt for his hidden metal phoenix inside the blaze (most people were not aware that the bigger phoenix hid a smaller metal phoenix inside).

Thanks to Kaiser for sound that pierced the night.

And of course we thank all the touchsamadhi, tranceplant, divine balance and audiognome DJs who created a crystal palace of living sound that, for awhile, became a world.

May 21 Midwest electronic Musicshowcase: Flyers/Promotion/Vj's

From: "matt supert" EMAIL: massup909 (AT) hotmail (DOT) com

Hello everyone. Im writing about the Midwest Electronic Music Showcase which I am helping to organize in Bloomington Inidiana on Saturday, May 21. at Rhino's All-Ages Club in Bloomington, Indiana. For those of you who do not know, this is a free event for people of all walks to perform, and enjoy electronic Livepa. We will be conducting workshops on Livepa performance as well during this show.

This is a free vent designed to build a community. The event is free for all, and unfortunatly this means none of the artists will be paid.

I have contacted some of you before in regards to being visual artists for the show. We are still looking for visiaul artists to perform. If you are intrested please send me an email with information regarding your set, gear setup, and requirements you might need for your show.

If you are a livepa artist of any sort please contact me or glaive at: glaive@glaive.org
we have a subtantial list of artists so far including:

Glaive
Decimal
Battery Collection
Dynamic Interplay
Actuel
Dubathonic
Decrepitude

The list of artists so far is not set and final. People may drop out and we may have room to fit in more artists. Please do not hesitate to write if you are intrested in performing. All forms of Live PA are considered for this event.

If you are a DJ, we are currently looking for a DJ(s) to fill in small time slots (10-20 mins) in between the livepa acts while we transition acts and setup gear. Details are not worked out yet, but we may need a DJ and may not. Again please contact me or Glaive if you are intrested.

Finally, within the next few weeks we will be kicking off a promotional tour distributing flyers. If you live in the city of Chicago and feel you would like to distribute some flyers we can probably provide you with a number of flyers for free to distribute. Email us with the number of flyers you are intrested and we can work something out.

Best Regards,
Matt Supert

Credits

main players: Troy, Julee, Shai, Derby, Igor, Underfoot, Mike L., Kaiser Soze, Devorah and The Fixer.

supporting cast: DJ Psygomin and his wife Kristy (nearly the first ones at
the venue); Troy/Julee friend Eric; Sheri and Patrick with Shai; Emily;
mu_chao, artists Jerad, and Bern Haggard; Toki and the other Audiognomes; NOD from N. Carolina; Blue Spectral Monkey; Uzi; Damon; Ben Heise; Aaron Edwards; Vinay Gupta and Beatrice, who built the Temple; Chris Deschaine; John Sacelli; Michael Paoli; Katrinia Spelldancer; Nikki Baird; Liz Sedeno; Maureen Riley; Robert Irving; Carla Starla; Mel Slushy; Glenda; Spunn fire troupe especially Chris Fawcett, Matt and Melissa Atwood, Alena, Mark L., Marvin Marzocco and several more; Dan Neva of Log Squared (who brought the subs we never used); Elon; Sameer; and Seph. probably I still have not mentioned everybody.

A special artistic shout out to artist Chris Deschaine and reader and
shaman John Sacelli who teamed up to create one of the more interesting
and popular rooms, populated by the tarot deck they jointly developed.

Big kudos to Devorah and Jerad, both skilled artists who developed their first tapestries for this event. Both were acclaimed and both took only one week to do the tapestry, and they had never done one before.

BTW a little history about the tapestries in the main stage room. The tapestry directly over the dj booth was created for the first psychedelic trance party ever in San Francisco in 1988 I believe, and I was told has been to Goa and several other countries for a myriad of parties since. It was brought by Blue Spectral Monkey.

OOPS: AN EXPLANATION OF THE SOUND PROBLEMS AT 3 AM

To allow max people to see Spunn's fire dance, the sound had to be lowered, because the big door had to be raised. If we had maintained the same volume we would have gotten instant noise complaints. We had not had time to figure out a way to let people know what was going on, and some people who did not realize that Spunn was performing then left without knowing what had happened.

Our apologies to DJ UZI whose set was disrupted by this.

Our apologies as well to Spunn for the cramped space for fire poi. The venue rented out the remainder of their lot to commercial trucking, which means we were by contract confined to the much smaller area around the venue doors. Which sucked, but it was what we had to work with.

3. Metatronic Vol2
==================

Metatronic Volume 2 is coming in less than two months, on April 9th! Flyer and details coming soon . . .

4. One of Us! One of Us!
========================

We really need more victims, er, organizers to join us in building this from a very very very good to an orgasmically GOOD OH GOD IT'S SO GOOD event. If you join the Chilluminati you can take on as much or as little work as you want. Our ideal for the Chilluminati is that it is an open community, where anyone interested in Psy and Goa in Chicago can made a difference. How to get involved? Get on the Volunteers email list on the page http://www.chilluminati.org/2004/11/chicago-contacts-mailing-lists.html .

Or write to us at crew@chilluminati.org

There will be a meeting probably in March that you can attend to get more intimately involved in Metatronic Vol2.

5. The Turning Away People . . . Thing
======================================

As those of you who came know, we filled the venue in about an hour, and had to turn away most people who showed up after 11. Over the course of the night, we might have turned away as many people as actually got into the party.

We had anticipated this might be a problem, which was why we set up about a month before Metatronic our RSVP button at http://www.chilluminati.org#register . Unfortunately many people did not go to the website or otherwise did not know about the RSVP.

We will do the RSVP again for Metatronic Vol2, and will do other things to get more people into the next event.

In the meantime please, next Metatronic, do these things - read the website info; use the RSVP; and try to show up in the first hour of the event. This more than anything will assure your admission into the next event.

requoted with permission

so i decided to head to chicago this weekend to catch sound tribe
sector 9 (currently touring for you live music fans, definitely worth
checkin out, tour dates at www.sts9.com) and head to the chilluminati
event 'metatronic'. these cats certainly know how to throw down...i
was absolutely shocked when i showed up at 10:30 and the party was
already half full, and it filled in pretty quick-like after that; this
is even more shocking for those of you familiar with the midwest where
"trance" is a dirty word that sends electronic music fans running. the
evening started out with shai on the chill tip, then S.O.T, Derby, and
Kaiser Soze brought the full-on madness that kept everybody movin
(scott played so hard he had people raving on top of the speakers),
then Dan Efex came on and gradually brought us back to the chill zone
as people started to wuss out and leave.

All in all a pretty awesome party, lots of good people from various
states (representatives from WI, IL, IN, OH, MI, probably a couple
others i didn't talk to). glad to see the scene moving inwards from
the coasts! mark your calendars for the chilluminati festival in july,
it'll be hoppin!

7. Mad props for crew

adapting this from something Derby wrote on Isratrance (thanks Derb. . . )

Thanks to Airyk and Sarah, who came from Iowa AND helped set up early AND helped us at the door AND help us outside turning people away AND helped clean up at the end of the party AND never complained AND had a great time while do it all!! Please come again.

Thanks to Eklypz who came from even further away in Iowa, and spent massive time helping setup and at the door and outside, then later with cleanup. Without you it would have been a completely different (in a bad way) event. We owe you several!

Thanks to Paul and Daniel of Wisconsin Audiognomes for adding lots of positive energy to the VIBE and taking great pics AND working the door AND turning away people at the entrance.

Thanks to our Vision Architects, Psymbolic.com (julee and Troy) for putting in their extra time to set up wonderful deco and running the video projections all night. Thanks to Troy for putting in way too much time outside and at the door dealing with the pissed off crowds outside.

Thanks to Patrick and SHai for providing some excellent CHAI tea through PsyCHAI, and for their support on the door.

Thanks to Kaiser and SOT for setting up and Running the sound and providing wonderful music throughout the night.

Thanks to all the DJs Shai, SOT, Dan Efex, Derby and Kaiser Soze for all the homework leading up to a smooth and powerful evolution of sound throughout the night. Thanks to DanEfex for his "downtempo chillage" what a great set by an amazing person and dj.

Thanks to The Fixer and Devorah for their support on the door and outside all night, keeping the water and toilet paper and spare change running, continued support, phone calls, and organization, running to Costco, and networking skills for making this event possible. Without them we would still be in our bedrooms (damn straight!).

Thanks to the fire troupe Spunn for their amazing, entrancing fire sets just before daybreak. Matt and Melissa, you rule the dawn.

Thanks to Sameer and Elon for bring smiles, drums and breakdancing.

Thanks to Ben of Modern Magics who brought his lasers, laser car and other great light toys;

To Mike of Darklight Studios, who brought some artwork that hung all night near the Psychai table, and really added depth amidst the tapestries;

To all of you who drove to Metatronic from Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and downstate Illinois just to be at this event.

Much Love,

The Fixer

Party reviews: Infected Mushroom in Chicago 2005.01.07

Infected Mushroom Chicago pics here and here

P. writes

This was the swankiest club I've ever set foot in, and perhaps the mere fact that I choose "swanky" to describe it makes me the kind of person who doesn't belong in such an establishment. I'm a hardworking, artsy guy who makes a decent living, but damn if I didn't feel like I wasn't good enough to breathe the air there. Just about everyone looked like they strolled in fresh from a salon / shopping spree at Sax Fith Avenue.

Plus, what was with roping off the Round Bar? That kind of elitist exclusion put a bit of a damper on this show, as compared to the one I saw in Dallas . . . where everyone was more laid back.

"The sound at the Sound Bar is the best I've heard at a club, which amply made up for a somewhat unfortunate layout of the dance floor."
This I partially agree with. It was great hearing those extended-cut tracks on such a pristine system, but it sure was frustrating maneuvering through that human gumbo. I constantly felt like I was bumping or being bumped.

Highlights

  • meeting new friends and seeing old ones
  • talking about/plotting future events with aforementioned friends
  • Derby and Igor's tag set -- on-point as usual
. . . Good job on visuals [PSYMBOLIC]. Thanks to the gross excess of LCDs, I could even watch their VJ performance while taking a piss in the men's room. SWANKY!!!

Bummer points

  • only 1 unreleased track in IM's set
  • people huddled motionless on dancefloor with drinks
  • Duvdev's DJ performance = not "all that?" // I was already getting my coat to go distribute flyers by this point, but heard some weirdness.
Tracks coming to an abrupt end, silence, etc. I saw S.C. roll his eyes more than once.
  • The valet parking staff forced me to remove my car at 2:30, and were pissed I didn't leave sooner. So I basically had to stop giving out flyers, gather up the carpoolers and leave without saying a proper goodbye to anyone. That sucked.

S. writes

Here is my brief view of the night:

Yes, the sound in the place is great.

The dance floor is setup really weird. The decor is nice and done well, the two flight stairs in the middle of the dance floor is really strange.

The music, a pop version of psytrance. There are good parts to the songs, but there are way to many parts that ruin it. I hope this show and future ones gets more people into psy, but when did psy become "high-end" club music? I suppose when acts like IM started making pop tunes. Like New York, I am sure there will be two different parts to the psy scene in Chicago. Let's try and not confuse the two.

D. writes

the vibe blew away my expectations!! . . . A lot of people came just to see Infected.

There were a lot of trancers there too. The crowd was cheering and singing along to the semi live words of duvdev.

that's an accurate review on trance addict although the club was packed and the security were asking people to back off the main stage where IM were playing.

I thought it was super show, and a great intro for chicago into the realm of psychedelic trance.

I can also see how the commerical aspect to this scene may explode and leave us small timers in the dust wondering what happened.

About Infected Mushroom

*With over 150,000 albums sold world wide and with close to 500,000 people having seen them live, it is no exaggeration to say that INFECTED MUSHROOM is the most successful Psychedelic act in the world today.

. . .

*Infected Mushroom is Erez Eizen and Amit Duvdevani (nicknamed Duvdev).

*Both Duvdev, born in 1974, and Erez, born in 1980, have a classical music education.

*Erez started learning to play the organ at the age of four, and he has been combining music and computers since the age of eleven.

*Duvdev studied the piano for nine years.

*A mutual friend suggested they should get together and the two found enough in common to “surreptitiously” explore the rising psychedelic trends coming out of the clubs.

The results :

• 1998 saw the release of their debut album, “The Gathering”, which was heavily inspired by the surreal ambient dance of Simon Posford, X-Dream, and Transwave.

• In 2000 they released “Classical Mushroom”, an aggressively melodic trance album that introduced them to the European and Japanese markets, and turned IM into one of the top trance duos in the world.

• 2001 brought us “B.P Empire” – overloaded with their talent, creativity and musical background, the album opened doors in the Americas – USA and South America – and established Infected Mushroom as the leaders of this genre.

• “Converting Vegetarians” was released in 2003. An adventurous project, combining Trance and Freestyle on a Double CD, “Converting” leads the listener through a sonic journey of epic proportions showing IM’s great talent as masters of analog resonance.

Through the years Infected Mushroom has gradually gained global recognition, appearing at major parties in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and the UK as well as touring in Canada and the USA.
